Charles Demuth was an American painter and watercolorist associated with Precisionism, active in the interwar years. He developed crisp geometry, layered planes and luminous color derived from Cubism and Futurism. Works such as "My Egypt" and "I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold" turn silos, signage and industrial architecture into emblematic compositions. Based in Lancaster, he created "poster portraits" dedicated to friends and fixed the modern urban scene in a distinctive graphic idiom.
