Étienne Dinet was a French Orientalist painter deeply connected with Algeria, where he stayed regularly before settling in Bou Saâda. Unlike many Orientalists who worked primarily from an exoticized vision, Dinet developed an intimate knowledge of Algerian society, landscapes and culture. His paintings notably depict everyday life, the people of Bou Saâda, Saharan landscapes and, later in his career, Muslim religious subjects.
