Nationality: France

Édouard-Louis Dubufe was a French painter and one of the leading portraitists of the Second Empire and early Third Republic. He developed a worldly, refined manner—with smooth modelling, luminous flesh tones and sumptuous renderings of fabrics—rooted in Academic tradition and his father’s studio. His works—whether likenesses of aristocrats and the haute bourgeoisie, official portraits or group compositions—are marked by elegant poses, precise draughtsmanship and carefully orchestrated light.
