Louis Janmot was a French painter and poet associated with Romanticism and the Lyon school. His major work, The Poem of the Soul, is an extensive pictorial and literary cycle developed between 1835 and 1881. Through an initiatory journey combining religion, love, dreams, nature, and death, Janmot created a deeply spiritual body of work influenced by his Catholic faith, Ingres, and Italian Renaissance painting.
